Gold Hill was a sister mining district to Virginia City Located in the Virginia Mountain Range Northeast of Carson City. It was settled in 1859 when gold and silver was discovered. Mining operations peaked in 1877 and continued until 1918. The Comstock Lode was shared between Virginia City and Gold Hill. Total mine production for the Comstock Lode from 1859 - 1982 was 192 million ounces of silver and 8 million ounces of gold, 80% of which was mined prior to 1880. Total value at time of mining was $412 million, $11 billion in 2009 dollars. The population of Gold Hill peaked at 8,000 but has declined to 200 today.
