Description
A rare photo of the Portland Head Lighthouse where winds are calm, sky and ocean are clear and blue. The weather at Portland Head is some of the worst on the Maine coast with stories of ice frozen so thick on the rocks surrounding the light that it was extremely dangerous to traverse from the keeper's house to the light. The lighthouse at Portland Head was completed in 1790, being the first to be built with funding from the US Government. The Keeper's House was reconstructed 100 years later. Today the Coast Guard retains operation of the light and fog horn while the Town of Cape Elizabeth owns the lighthouse and keeper's house.
