Description
The Upper Yellow Jacket Mine Shaft was one of three in Gold Hill which began in 1860. A bonanza body of ore was discovered which was largely mined by 1870 although some mining continued through the early 1900's. A disasterous fire occurred in 1869 at the 800 foot level caused by an unattended lantern igniting a pocket of methane gas. 35 miners lost their lives in the worst mining disaster in Nevada history.
